Decision to Extend Mayoral Term on Hold Until Spring

WISCONSIN RAPIDS -- A measure that would extend the city's mayoral term from two years to fours years has been officially tabled for now.

Introduced at last month's common council, members voted to hold a special meeting of the whole to further discuss the idea of lengthening the term for mayor. However, consensus among the council is that with spring elections just around the corner, making a decision on the matter would be too quick without deeper discussion.

"I don't want to speak for everyone, but it sounded like something that is going to take significant time to address," said Alderperson Joe Zurfluh.

"It's complicated, and there are many aspects to it," said Alderperson Scott Kellogg. "I believe it should be postponed."

Council members voted unanimously to table further discussion on the charter ordinance to extend the mayoral term until the March 2018 common council meeting.
