Posted

For the City Times

Due to increasing demand "Growing Friends Community Gardens" (GFCG) has expanded again.

They have newly created four in ground beds measuring 60 to 100 square feet each. In addition, they've built two 4 feet by 12 feet raised beds and another three 4 feet by 8 feet beds.Growing Friends Community Gardens was born in 2013 by the joint efforts of the First Congregational Church, Wood County Agricultural Extension and Master Gardener Volunteers, Wood County Health Department, and Riverview Hospital.

With land on the corner of Hill and Spruce that was donated by the hospital, GFCG are able to provide a gardening space for those who otherwise wouldn't be able to garden. These gardeners include people who live in apartment or rental situations, or who's own yard is too shaded and or too small.

Also provided is on-site gardening tools and educational materials to help ensure gardening success. In addition, they have tabletop beds for people who have physical limitations. This year the GFCG will hold it'sfirst seed exchange, and through a donation made by Empty Bowls are making available to those with limited funds, free seeds and plants.

If people are interested in renting a garden space for this season they may do so at the First Congregational Church located at 311 2nd St. South in Wisconsin Rapids. The fee of $10.00 can be waved in cases of hardship. Multiple beds can also be rented on a first come basis.

We encourage people to check us out on Facebook and join us in the gardens.
