Hunters with disabilities have until Sept. 15 to sign up for fall deer hunt

DNR program offers accessible hunting opportunities on private land

MADISON – Hunters with disabilities have until Sept. 15 to contact landowners and secure spots for Wisconsin’s Gun Deer Hunt for Hunters with Disabilities.
The hunt runs Oct. 4-12 on sponsored private properties across the state, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
To be eligible, hunters must possess a valid Class A, C, D or Class B shoot from stationary vehicle permit issued for longer than one year. Hunters also must have a gun deer license.
Interested hunters should contact sponsoring landowners before Sept. 15 to participate. Some properties can accommodate more hunters than others, so hunters are advised to contact potential sponsors as early as possible to determine availability.
To sign up, hunters or assistants should provide their name, contact information and DNR customer ID number. Eligible hunters may sign up for one sponsored property per year.

“This special hunt offers hunters with disabilities the opportunity to deer hunt during a time and in a place that is more accessible for them,” said Brooke VanHandel, DNR assistant deer and elk specialist. “We are so thankful for our landowner sponsors who are willing to partner with hunters and open their properties to allow more individuals to participate in Wisconsin’s deer hunting tradition.”
The Gun Deer Hunt for Hunters with Disabilities began in 1992 and provides hunting opportunities for approximately 400 hunters each year. The hunt has been providing accessible opportunities to deer hunt for over 30 years.
To sponsor a hunt, landowners must have at least 60 acres available and be able to host at least three hunters. The sponsor sign-up deadline for 2025 has passed.
For more information, visit the DNR’s Deer Hunting for Hunters with Disabilities webpage or contact VanHandel at 608-354-3492 or Brooke.VanHandel@wisconsin.gov.
