Topic is one of three in new Spring Garden Series

Mid-State Technical College is offering a continuing education class called “Growing Vegetables in Straw Bales” in its new Spring Garden Series for gardening enthusiasts in the community.

Participants will learn new techniques on container gardening to achieve a healthier, more productive and beautiful garden this summer. Attendees can choose to register for the class offered on Saturday, March 18, in Stevens Point or the class on Wednesday, March 22, in Wisconsin Rapids. The fee for the class is $20.

“Growing Vegetables in Straw Bales” explores a form of container gardening that when done properly with straw bales is akin to gardening in compost, leading to larger roots and fewer weeds. The class includes hands-on demonstration of straw in various stages of preparation or conditioning before planting. The class fee includes a copy of Joel Karsten’s “Straw Bale Gardens” booklet.

More details and registration information for “Growing Vegetables in Straw Bales” and the other offerings in the Spring Garden Series can be found at www.mstc.edu/gardenseries.
