Portage man killed when struck by train

A Junction City man struck by a train May 25 has died from his injuries. The Portage County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a report of a person struck by a train near Main Stree and Center Avenue at 4:26 p.m.

When deputies arrived they discovered a severely damaged lawn tractor on the roadway near the railroad tracks.

The initial investigation revealed that James Pierson, 78, was operating the lawn tractor when he was struck by a train. He suffered extensive injuries and later died from his injuries at a local medical facility.

The incident remains under investigation.
