Rapids Youth Wrestling places six in top five

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Wisconsin Rapids Youth Wrestling had one state champion, and five others finish in the top five, at the WWF State Tournament March 24-25 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.

Jackson Freeman finished in first place, wrestling in the 80-pound division. Freeman finished with a tournament record of 4-0.

Wrestling at 100 pounds, Aspin Tritz went 7-1 for the tournament, and finished in third place. Reed Akkerman also grabbed a third-place finish in Madison. Competing at 64 pounds, Akkerman finished the tournament with a record of 5-1.

Rapids also scored a pair of fourth-place finishes. Deegan Armagost, wrestling at 105 pounds, went 4-2 in state competition. Waylon Fuller, at 66 pounds, also finished 4-2 on the weekend.

Hazel Holden grabbed a fifth-place tournament finish. Holden, at 77 pounds, wrapped up tournament competition with a record of 2-2.

This season saw a record 130 kids registered in the program, and 23 wrestlers from second-eighth grades qualified to go to state, which was a record for the club (the previous record was 21 kids in 2019).
