Roofing Trainer Could See Jail Time

A Wisconsin Rapids man faces misdemeanor charges after trying to teach some roofers how to do their job.

Matthew E. Bretl, 34, faces a maximum sentence of 90 days in a jail, or a $1,000 fine or both for charges of disorderly conduct, a class B misdemeanor.

According to court documents, on August 5 at 8:20 AM, Wisconsin Rapids police officers were dispatched to a residence on the 3000 block of 3rd St. S. to investigate a reported disturbance.

Upon arrival, police spoke to Bretl who said he had been awakened that morning by some roofers at a neighboring house. Bretl told police he went to the residence, climbed a ladder onto the roof and began working because the roofers were not doing the job properly.

Police report that Bretl appeared intoxicated.

Police spoke with the roofing contractor who said Bretl had climbed on the roof and began shoveling shingles. He said Bretl was swearing at the workers and telling them they didn't know what they were doing.

The owner of the home and the contractor told Bretl he wasn't welcome but he reportedly refused to leave.

Bretl was released from custody the same day on a $1,000 signature bond under the condition he have no contact with the neighbor or residents.

He returns to Branch 1 of Wood County Circuit Court on October 10 at 9:00 AM for a pre-trial conference.
