WISCONSIN RAPIDS – A ceremony honoring area veterans will be held on the Wood County Courthouse lawn on May 25.

During the ceremony, men and women who served during World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Korean Conflict will be honored with legacy stones

Recognition will be given to Jeanne Groskopf, who after returning from service in World War II became active in the local American Legion Post and served as its chaplain. She went on to serve as chaplain of the Wisconsin Veterans Department and today is chaplain emeritus of Post 9.

Lincoln High School classmates of former Navy pilot William Metzger are honoring him with a legacy stone, as well. He served in Vietnam and was captured and held prisoner from 1967-1973.

Brothers often served in the military at the same time and the Schmutzer brothers are one of those families to be honored.

These names and many others will be read by Karen Schill, a member of the Veterans Memorial committee.

The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. and will feature speaker Senator Patrick Testin and will conclude with a 21-gun salute.
