A 25-year-old Wisconsin Rapids man faces charges of second degree reckless endangerment and false imprisonment after taking police on a high speed chase.
According to police reports, on March 12 a Wisconsin State Trooper observed a white truck traveling at speeds of up to 55 mph in a 40 mph zone near Whitrock Ave. in Grand Rapids. The trooper immediately turned on his siren and emergency lights in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but instead the truck increased its speed up to as high as 110 mph.
The pursuit lasted for nearly five minutes, and law enforcement noted that the driver crossed the center line multiple times, failed to stop for various stop signs, and endangered other motorists. After contact with the Grand Rapids Police Department with information on the truck's description, the suspected driver was identified as Cody Brown.
Instead of pursuing Brown any further, they went to his address on Two Mile Ave. to wait for him. Brown would soon arrive, observed to exit his vehicle and immediately run inside his residence and lock the door.
Law enforcement ordered all occupants out of the house with the squad car PA with no response, but soon after a woman came out to speak to police. According to the woman, Brown came home "drunk" a few minutes prior and forced her downstairs in the basement with him. He would not let the woman out, though she escaped minutes after police arrived.
Officers entered the home to place Brown into custody, but he refused stating "You'll have to kill me first -- I'm not going to jail."
Eventually, officers collectively gained entry to the locked basement door and placed Brown under arrest. He would later fail field sobriety tests confirming that he was intoxicated. According to the defendant, he fled police because he wanted to get home to his kids.
If convicted, Brown faces up to 20 years imprisonment and up to $50,000 in fines. His preliminary hearing is set for March 28.
