A 41-year-old man has been charged with his fifth offense of driving while intoxicated.

According to police reports, on July 28 an officer initiated a traffic stop on Highway 73 for a car traveling at a speed of 48 m.p.h in a 35 m.p.h. zone. The driver, identified as Caleb Schedgick of Wisconsin Rapids, was observed to have slurred speech and glassy eyes.

The officer also noticed a strong smell of intoxicants coming from the vehicle.

After allegedly informing the officer that he only had a "couple" to drink, he stated that he couldn't take a field sobriety test due to a recent surgery he had on his right ankle. Schedgick then told the officer "it doesn't really matter anyway, I'm drunk."

Schedgick would later test at a blood alcohol level of .238, well above the legal limit.

If convicted, Schedgick faces up to six years imprisonment and up to $10,000 in fines. His pre-trial conference is scheduled for Sept. 2.
