Wisconsin Rapids Swim Club announces Travis McMahon qualifies for state

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Wisconsin Rapids Swim Club attended the Lakeland Loons Invitational on Jan. 18. The event was held at Lakeland Union High School in Minocqua. The following Central Wisconsin Clubs were in attendance: Phillips, Minocqua, Black River Falls, Bayfield, Medford and Bloomer.

The highlight of the day came when Travis McMahon won the 50yd Freestyle in 33.2 seconds qualifying him for the state championship. The 10 and Under Short Course Championships will be held on March 1-2 at Verona High School in Verona. Travis went on to win the 50yd Butterfly, second in the 100yd freestyle and 50yd Breaststroke, all of which are new club records. “Travis has been a Kraken since fall of 2023.” said Dave Kontz, Head Coach. “This young man attends every practice and shows up ready to work hard.” Presently, Travis holds ten club records in individual and relay events.

Other first place winners are as follow: Josiah O’Day, 200yd Freestyle and 100yd Backstroke; Mya Marquard, 100yd Freestyle; Jameson Bernette, 100yd Breaststroke; Elyxa Peck, 50yd Butterfly: Addison Borek, 50yd Butterfly, and the 1-2 punch of Addison Borek and Vivan Zacher winning the 100yd Individual Medley.

The second place winners include: Aubrey Knoll, 50yd Backstroke; Elyxa Peek, 50yd Breaststroke and 100yd Freestyle; Lilly Reetz, 50yd Freestyle; Jameson Bernette, 100yd Individual Medley; Gavin Knoll, 50yd Freestyle and 100yd Backstroke.

Finishing in third place are as follows: Ellie Graumann, 50yd Backstroke; Reese Koch, 50yd Butterfly; Addison Borek, 50yd Breaststroke; Lilly Reetz, 50yd Breaststroke and 100yd Freestyle; Maddie Graumann, 50yd Freestyle; Vivian Zacher, 100yd Freestyle; Nola Woller, 100yd freestyle; Jameson Bernette, 100yd Freestyle.

Fourth places finishers for the day are: Janessa Rucinski, 50yd Butterfly; Nola Woller, 100yd Butterfly; Anna Gumz, 25yd Breaststroke; Mya Marquard, 100yd Backstroke; Vivian Zacher, 50yd Freestyle; Mackenzie Miloch, 50yd Backstroke; Gavin Knoll, 100yd Freestyle.

Moving on the fifth place finishers: Nola Woller, 50yd Butterfly; Anna Gumz, 25yd Freestyle and Backstroke; Abbie Graumann, 100yd Backstroke; Maddie Graumann, 50yd Breaststroke; Mackenzie Miloch, 100 Individual Medley; Reese Koch, 100yd Freestyle; Gavin Bernette, 50yd Backstroke; Ellie Graumann, 200yd Backstroke.

In the sixth place: Janessa Rucinski, 50yd Breaststroke; Abbie Graumann, 50yd Backstroke and 100yd Individual Medley; Ellie Graumann, 50yd Breaststroke; Allyson Coats, 200yd Breaststroke and 100yd Individual Medley.

Finally, the newest members of the team do not miss practice and continue to get better each time they race. The following Krakens had Personal Records: Noah Grosskopf, 50yd Backstroke; Cody Graumann 25yd Freestyle; Emma Kay, 50yd Backstroke and Freestyle; Kensington Lercher, 50yd Backstroke; Rhiannon Zabawa, 50yd Freestyle.

The most exciting part of any swim meet are the relays. Age group swimmers included: Anna Gumz, Kensington Lercher, Emma Kay, Jenessa Rucinski, and Abbie Graumann. The girls combined to finish fourth in the Medley Relay and third in the Freestyle Relay.

There were two relays of middle school girls swimming for the Krakens on this day. The first group was Mackenzie Miloch, Mya Marquard, Kyndel Borek, and Nola Woller. These girls placed first in the 200yd Medley Relay and second in the 200yd Freestyle Relay. The second relay consisted of Allyson Coates, Addison Borek, Vivian Zacher, Ellie Graumann and Reeyce Matthews. The girls finished in third in the 200yd Medley and second in the 200yd Freestyle Relay.

The final event of the day was the senior relays. Swimming for Rapids girls, Elyxa Peck, Maddie Graumann, Lilly Reetz, Reese Koch. The Krakens swam to a third in the 200yd Medley and first in the 200yd Freestyle Relay. The boys are Gavin Bernette, Jameson Bernette, Gavin Knoll, and Josiah O’Day. These boys took first in the 200yd Medley and second in the 200yd freestyle Medley.

The WRSC will close out the winter season with the Divisional Meet which will be held in Minocqua on Feb. 1-2. The top six finishers from each event will move on to the Conference Championships which will be held in Tomahawk on Feb. 8-9.
