WISCONSIN RAPIDS -- The Wood County Veterans Memorial will host a dedication ceremony at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, as the name of Dale Paulin will be added to the memorial wall. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War in 1970 and 1971 and died as a result of his service.
The ceremony will be on the Wood County courthouse lawn, weather permitting. Otherwise, we will be in the auditorium at McMillan Memorial Library.
Among those being honored with legacy stones will be Evert (Glen) Cox, who was drafted into the Army during World War II. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was taken prisoner by the Germans in 1944. He ended up in a German Prison Camp where he was liberated by the Russians in May of 1945.
The names on the legacy stones represent those who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm and Iraq and during peace time. Among them are the five Werner brothers, sons of Rudolph and Rose Werner of Marshfield. The brothers served as medics, mechanics and in the infantry in Germany, the South Pacific Islands, China, Burma, India and in the Battle of the Bulge.
Donald and Howard Henry were in World War II, as was Clifford Lewis. Arthur and Clarence Neinfeldt and their brother-in-law Robert Grode served in World War II. Their brother George Neinfeldt served in Korea. We also are honoring the three Klevene brothers. Marvin Klevene served on the USS Chenango during World War II and Roland Klevene was with the 9th Army Air Corps on D Day, serving in England and Europe. Gerald Klevene served in the Navy from 1952-56 in Japan and the Philippines.
Jim Janz and his daughter Rae Ann, served in the Navy, she was in Iraq. The Hellner brothers and Ed’s son, Michael, served in the Wisconsin National Guard. Michael was called to duty during Desert Storm.
Chester Homann and Ronald Gansch were in Vietnam and Robert Jenkin was in the Air Force during the war in Vietnam. All of the names will be read by Karen Schill, a member of the Veterans Memorial committee.
Wood County Sheriff Thomas Reichert will be the speaker. The Rev. Aaron Becker, associate pastor at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, will offer the invocation and benediction. Craig Lambert, a Major in the Wisconsin Army National Guard, will be the emcee. McKenna Richardson and Kayla Sachs will lead in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Music will be provided by Ronda Alft, Peggy King, Kathleen Arminski and Cindy Orzel, members of the Aspiring Acapella.
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2534 will provide the color guard and rifle salute. Also taking part in the ceremony will be members of American Legion Post 9, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 101, American Legion Post 54, Marshfield; Post 442 Nekoosa, and Post 485, Rudolph; American Legion Riders District 8 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 55.
Other members of the volunteer committee are David LaFontaine, Bruce King, Keith McDowell, Diantha Neinfeldt, Nancy Quick, Jim Reigel and Tom Sachs. Dave Hoks and Dale Bowden also provided needed help.
The ceremony will conclude with a 21 gun salute and taps provided by Molly Thomas and Nicholas Smits of Assumption High School.
