Madison man drives into Wisconsin River

WOOD COUNTY – A Madison man escaped injury after he reportedly drove intoxicated into the Wisconsin River.
The crash occurred shortly before 3 a.m. on July 3 at the River Road West boat landing near Highway 66 in the Wood County town of Rudolph.
According to the Wood County Sheriff’s Department, 34-year-old Cody Schafer was seen walking through properties with wet clothing. Deputies responded, and eventually found Schafer, and learned his vehicle was submerged in the Wisconsin River.
Deputies were able to get to the vehicle, and found no one inside.
Schafer was taken into custody for operating under the influence.
No injuries were reported.
The Wood County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Portage County Sheriff’s Department, Wood County Rescue, the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department, Rudolph Fire Department, Rudolph First Responders, and United Ambulance.
