The Wisconsin Rapids Riverkings continue their playoff run with a series sweep of Detroit this weekend.
On Friday night, they trampled the Fighting Irish 10-0 in a game with eight different scorers contributing. Forward Ryan Mantz knocked in two goals, and goalie Erik Schuette stayed perfect on the night with 25 saves.
Saturday night told the same story, with an 11-1 pickup to complete the sweep of the Irish. Reed Kaiser picked up a playoff hat trick with three goals on the night. Goalies Joe Fratantonio and Erik Schuette combined for 15 saves on the night.
The Riverkings have now outscored their opponents 53-3 over the past five games, and are anticipating a close, hard fought second round playoff series against a skilled Chicago Cougars team. However, this is a challenge met with a fun outlook, according to Coach Marty Quarters.
“Now the real fun begins,” said Quarters.
The best-of-three series kicks off on Thursday and Friday night at the South Wood County Recreation Center at 7:30 p.m. (7:30 p.m. puck drop on Saturday if necessary) If successful, the Riverkings will advance to Boston to compete for the national title.
The Riverkings offer balanced scoring led by Midwest leading sorer Ryan Mantz, and his line mates Reed Kaiser and Kevin Van Bokkelen. Harrison Kohl heads up a deep defensive core, while the leagues top goaltender, rookie Erik Schuette has broken all Riverking records to date.
Tickets are $6, $4 for senior citizens, and $2 for students. Lincoln High School students, and South Wood County Youth Hockey Association players get in free of charge.
