Letter: Stand Firm Against Nazi Hate

To the Editor:

I couldn’t believe what I was viewing on the evening news in Charlottesville, Virginia.  Men were marching in the darkness with Nazi flags, KKK capes and burning torches, chanting Nazi slogans: “Sieg heil, blood & soil, death to the Jews.”

In the 1960s, I witnessed similar Klan gangs in meetings in the darkness of southern towns, designed to put black people in their place. They were enforcing the Jim Crow laws. But I never thought I would ever see this again in the country that I love.

We simply cannot accept this behavior —  not in Virginia, not in my community, not in America. We are better than that. Whatever name these groups use, their toxic, hateful message must be confronted. We have come too far to go back to fear, hate and injustice. America is a beacon to the world, not a country to bring shame.

My Dad fought the Nazis and died from injuries of World War II. Did we fight this war, and see clearly the horrible message Hitler stood for, to now have to fight it again? Join me in standing firm against this kind of tyranny. If you are not concerned today — you are not paying attention.

Wisconsin Rapids
