WISCONSIN RAPIDS — While the Wisconsin Rapids Riverkings may be champions on the ice, more importantly, they are champions off the ice.
Hosting their annual “Toys for Tots” home game just wasn’t enough, which provided families and children in need with with Christmas gifts. To follow up, players volunteered their time to become bell-ringers for the Salvation Army over the past week and through the holiday season.
From Walmart and Shopko to Walgreens, many put their time in outside for the “red kettle” campaign, which raises up to $30 per hour. This amount is enough to provide a family with groceries or shelter for the night.
“The Riverkings are all about giving back to a community that has supported them over the past few seasons,” said Head Coach Marty Quarters. “Without the support of the community, the Riverkings would not be where they are now — so any chance the team has to give back, the coaching staff makes sure that the boys do. The culture of the Riverkings is to give more than you receive and the holiday season is the time of year to volunteer and help those less fortunate.”
The team heads to the Chicago Showcase from Thursday through Sunday before holiday break.
