WISCONSIN RAPIDS – At the July 16 Wood County Board of Supervisors meeting, county officials recognized the public service of Gary L. Allworden, who died July 9 at the age of 79.

Allworden served the community and his country, first leaving the Wisconsin Rapids area to join the U.S. Air Force in 1961. He later returned to take employment at Nepco (Domtar) in Port Edwards. He worked there until his retirement in 1996.

Gary was appointed to the Wood County Board of Supervisors in 1998. He served in that role until Sept. 2014.

As a supervisor, he served on the Wood County Board of Health, the Sheriff & Traffic Committee, Unified Services Board, Shared Dispatch Committee, Traffic Safety Commission, Board of Social Services, Library Board, Planning & Zoning Committee, Judicial & Legislative Committee, Central Records Advisory, and Public Safety Committee.

Allworden also served as a trustee and president of the village of Port Edwards.

“(He) relished public service for the right reasons,” said County Board Chair Doug Machon.

Gary leaves behind his wife, Julie; son Daniel; and step-daughter, Gena.
