The annual Heritage Hollyday at the Historic Point Basse returns again this year on Saturday, Dec. 19.

The Hollyday is a look back to what a Christmas may have looked like in the mid-19th century, just as Wisconsin was becoming a state. The event runs from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for students and free for small children not yet in school. More than 100 people are expected to show up for the Hollyday.

This year’s Hollyday nears the 20th time the event has been held according to Tom Brehmer, chairman of the Historic Point Basse Citizens Committee.

“They have an interest in seeing what Christmas might have been like 150 years ago, here,” said Brehmer. “We read about stuff…but that was further east.”

He said Christmas celebrations in Central Wisconsin were more rustic than what historical accounts usually tell about the time period.

Traditional Christmas decorations from the period will be on display as well as sweet treats for something to snack. Hot drinks will also be available.

Visitors will have the chance to watch the blacksmith ply his trade and use traditional hand tools to make something of their very own to take home. The trading cabin will also be open and the trader himself will talk to visitors and answer questions.

“There will be live animals in the barn,” said Brehmer.

The Wakely House and Columbia School House will also be open. Brehmer said it will take about two hours to see everything.

Lamps will light the trails surrounding Point Basse and carolers will stroll through the area singing classic Christmas songs.

“That evening and after dark is kind of really cool with the candles and the lanterns,” said Brehmer.

The Historic Point Basse is located at 300 Wakely Rd. in Nekoosa. For more information, contact Don Broehmer at 715-459-1722.
