By Joe Bachman
A date has been set for a 12 person jury trial in the case of Miguel-Angel Oertel, who killed a Saratoga woman on Aug. 17, 2015.
Oertel, 18, was charged with 1st degree reckless homicide after police reports state that Oertel shot his ex-girlfriend’s mother in the stomach during an altercation. Oertel initially informed his ex-girlfriend over social media that he would commit suicide right in front of her after a recent break-up.
Later that day Oertel stopped at her mother’s Saratoga home carrying a shotgun. There was a struggle over the shotgun, and it went off, shooting 47-year-old Theresa Coates in the stomach. Oertel then turned the gun on himself and shot himself in the face. Oertel would survive his injuries and remains in custody.
On Oct. 13 Oertel pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
The 12 person jury trial is set for Apr. 19-21, 2016. If convicted, Oertel could face up to 60 years imprisonment.
