Local drug take back events cancelled

CENTRAL WISCONSIN – Local drug take back events have been cancelled throughout central Wisconsin as Prescription Drug Take Back Day, originally scheduled for April 25, is postponed.
“Out of an abundance of caution, in an effort to support social distancing to slow the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus), and in consideration of CDC guidelines related to COVID-19, the Wisconsin Department of Justice is canceling this event. We will be in touch if/when circumstances change. Thank you for your understanding and support of our efforts to prioritize the safety and health of our employees and the public,” the Department of Justice said in a release.
The Prescription Drug Take-Back Day goal is to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposal of prescription medications, while educating the general public about the potential for abuse of these medications.
Unused or expired medicine should never be flushed or poured down the drain. Removing potentially dangerous pharmaceutical substances from our state’s medicine cabinets helps to prevent them from going into our water supply. Water reclamation facilities are not designed to remove all of them and trace amounts of pharmaceuticals are showing up in rivers and lakes.
