Rapids man drives car off bridge

WOOD COUNTY – A Wisconsin Rapids man escaped serious injuries, when he drove his car off the Nepco Lake Bridge. The incident occurred just before 9 p.m. on June 10 in the Village of Port Edwards.
The Wood County Communication Center reports it received a call of a vehicle accident on the Highway 13 crossing. Witnesses observed a vehicle traveling northbound cross over the center median and southbound lanes. The vehicle crashed through the bridge fencing and became completely submerged in Nepco Lake. The driver, Jerry Mowery, 27, was able to exit the vehicle and get to shore. Mowery was the only occupant in the vehicle, and he received medical attention. The incident is currently being investigated, but speed and alcohol are believed to be contributing factors.
Wood County Sheriff’s Department, Wood County Rescue, Wisconsin Rapids Fire Department, Grand Rapids Police Department, Port Edwards Fire Department, Port Edwards First Responders, Saratoga First Responders, and Nieman’s Towing and Recovery assisted at the incident.
