Assumption Dominates in Win Over Newman
By David Keech, Sports Reporter
The Assumption Royals have faced some tough competition this season and looked to get back on a winning streak on the road against Newman Catholic. The Royals came out on top with a dominating performance on offense, shutting out the Cardinals 3-0.
The Royals didn’t waste any time getting things started. Gracie Wendels scored just five minutes into the game on a penalty kick, and the Royals took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Royals put pressure on Newman throughout the game, and Royals’ coach John Bingham credited having his complete team on the field as the reason.
“It was the first game in about two weeks that we were able to put our starting eleven on the field together,” Bingham said. “We played a great possession game and saw continued improvement from our younger players.”
Jasmine Hunn scored twice in the second half for Assumption. Her first goal came at the 52:00 mark, assisted by Macie Zurfluh. At the 79:00 mark, Hunn was assisted by Gracie Wendels.
Assumption’s relentless offensive pressure produced a glaring stat that told clearly told the story. The Royals outshot Newman 30 to 3.
The one negative was the inability to finish on numerous scoring opportunities.
Aquinas, the #2 ranked team in Division 4, comes to Wisconsin Rapids on Friday.
