For the City Times

United Way of Inner Wisconsin’s Day of Caring event is still on tomorrow, Oct. 24th starting at 9 AM.

“We rake rain or shine,” said Amy Fluno, Day of Caring coordinator. “This is the day volunteers have prepared for and are ready; this is the day home owners are expecting us. We are proceeding with our event tomorrow, so please come out and join us.”

Day of Caring will kick off at the Grand Rapids Lion’s Club at the intersection of County Trunk W and 36th St. S. in Wisconsin Rapids. Participants will receive their assignments at that time.

Volunteers can register their groups online at www.uwiw.org or by calling 715-421-0390. Volunteers under the age of 18 will need a waiver signed by a parent or guardian, also available online.

Volunteers need to provide their own rakes, gloves and transportation; homeowners will provide the bags if needed. Volunteers can also bring along donations of personal essential items (shampoo, toilet paper, etc.) to be donated to Catholic Charity’s Acorn Apartments.

Last year, 250 volunteers participated in Day of Caring and raked 66 yards.

All volunteers will receive a free t-shirt and lunch. Lunch sponsors include the Grand Rapids Lion’s Club, Pepsi Beverage Company and Subway. Lunch will be served from noon through 2 PM at the Lion’s Club.

This year’s t-shirt sponsors are the Wisconsin Rapids Noon Rotary Club and the Wisconsin Rapids Kiwanis Club.  We also thank the Grand Rapids Lion’s Club for the use of their facilities, providing volunteers and donating food, paper plates, napkins, utensils, etc.; and Quality Foods IGA for discounts on food.

For more information on how to get involved, contact Fluno at (715) 421-0390 or [email protected].
