WISCONSIN RAPIDS — It’s said you shouldn’t judge a book by a cover; especially when that book is a person.

Comprehensive Community Services (CCS) of Wood and Portage Counties are teaming up to bring a special evening for those who want to learn more about mental health. The event titled “We Are…” delves into not just the truth about mental health, but the process of discovering who “we are” — from artists, poets, musicians, teachers, film makers, and more that are afflicted with mental health issues.

“We have people who live in the community who experience mental health issues or living with mental health illnesses who are going to be there to display their talents and skills,” said coordinator Robyn Dunahee. “We also have service providers that will be there to offer up their talents and skills.”

The social networking event will be setup in a rather unique way, as volunteers will be “books” that attendees can check out for a few minutes at a time. “Readers” are encouraged to ask questions in the allotted time to find out more about that person’s (or book’s) mental health condition and struggles, along with their unique talent.

“We have 27 “books” — about half of providers and half of people with talents to display,” said Dunahee.

Held once in both counties, Wisconsin Rapids will host their “We Are…” event on Wednesday, April 19 at 5:30 p.m. at McMillan Library, 490 E. Grand Ave. Stevens Point will host theirs on Thursday, April 25, at 5:30 p.m. at the Portage Library, 1001 Main St. There will be door prizes and food provided at the event.

“Our hope is to showcase the talents with people who have struggled with mental health issues, as well as present some resources in an innovative, but unique way.”
