Riverkings sweep first round of playoffs

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Wisconsin Rapids Riverkings defeated the Rum River Mallards, March 4-5, to sweep the first round of playoffs at home.
Friday’s game was exciting, as the Riverkings were tied with six minutes left in the game. Liam Hogan played the role of hero as he notched his first playoff goal. His goal jolted the Riverkings as Grant Newcomer, Colby Brett, Jeff Rebmann, and Reece Mcdonald tallied points which led the team to a 5:1 win.
Riley Allen played well as he saved 20 of 21 shots faced.
Saturday’s game was much of the same, as the Riverkings defeated the Mallards 4:1. Goals came from Ben Pizzimenti, Reece McDonald, and Geo Grano, who tallied two on the night.
Will Pinney stopped 27 of 28 shots, earning his first playoff win with the Riverkings.
The No. 2-seeded Riverkings moved on to the second round of the playoffs against the No. 3-seeded Hudson Havoc. with a bid to nationals on the line. The best of three series was held March 11-13 at the South Wood County Recreation Center.
